Postdoctoral Mentoring Plan

  1. Faculty member will attend a STEM mentoring workshop Professional Development
  2. Faculty and postdoc will collaboratively develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP). This should be a useful compact between your mentors and yourself and will help guide your short- and long-term career plans. Here is some good guidance for developing an that suits the postdoc’s professional goals  IDP- NewIDP-paper and here is a free tool for reflecting on career goals and formulating an IDP.
      • Faculty member and post doc will meet regularly to discuss progress, update the IDP as relevant, and create annual reports of achievements.
      • Faculty member will provide guidance for developing IDP based on post doc’s career goals (e.g., different academic positions, outside of academia).
      • Outline a plan for generating publications and grant proposals
  3. Faculty member and post doc will meet regularly to discuss progress, update the IDP as relevant, and create annual reports of achievements.
  4. Postdoc will attend at least two Professional Development classes at Texas State University. This can include the university’s STEP program for successful teaching (depends on when employment is initiated) or other workshops offered through CoSE  (e.g., workshops on communication skills, understanding and teaching a diverse student population, grantsmanship…). See CoSE examples of courses.
  5. Postdoc will attend Meet and Greets and other social programming to exchange ideas and make connections across campus.
  6. Post doc will participate in one national or international conference each year of funding.
  7. Post doc will participate in judging one TXST conference (Graduate college, WISE, or departmental colloquium).
  8. Regularly participate in departmental seminars and provide one departmental seminar presentation within the first year.
  9. Post doc will go through exit monitoring process for assessments
    • Examine success of the post doc’s program and experiences
    • Evidence can be used for grants to show broader impact of outcomes and for good stewardship of the funding.
  10. Post doc will provide contact information for permanent job placement following completion of the post doc to the faculty member and to the Exit monitoring survey.
